We’d been asked to etch a rather large piece of beech ply with one of Kurt’s poems and we felt very proud to see it hanging in such a beautiful gallery space.
A good example of using simple materials at scale to make a large impactful statement.
The gallery is in such a beautiful area. Well worth a visit to the most westerly town in Cornwall, St. Just in Penwith.
The exhibition was a reminder of how privileged we are to be working in our county's creative community. But also of the fragility of that environment. The Jackson Foundation is a multi-award winning, carbon-negative art-space celebrating the relationship between art and the natural world. Friends of the Earth had an accompanying display of their work; of which Kurt is a supporter.
Visitors are welcome to view the paintings until 24th February 2024.

]]>They are a cost effective way to create portable and highly visible signage and at Cut By Beam, out of our workshop in the Cornish countryside, we make a lot of them for a variety of clients. See the one we recently made for the Welsh Shire Coffee Company above, or for the Old Custom House, formerly in St. Ives.
We understand that these signs often need to be outside in all weather conditions, and so must be both sturdy and rain-resistant. We make our A-frames from marine plywood and give them a treatment of oil before they leave us to enhance the final look, but that also helps with their longevity. It's a great idea if you then top up that finish now and again on site, depending on how much use they get.
We add strong hinges on the top where the sides join together, and a metal hook and eye on the edge to stop them over-extending. For an extra small charge, we can add a black-board paint section to allow you to write temporary messages on the boards when necessary.
If you go to our Web Shop you'll notice that there are options on the thickness of the wood you might like. As well as receiving your A-Frame assembled or not.
CLICK HERE TO ORDER YOUR A-FRAME or feel free to ask for a bulk price by using our Contact page. We can offer discounts if you are having more than one A-frame created from the same design.
Don't forget we can do other signage too. Just use our Contact page to enquire and get a bespoke quote.

Merchant & Mills are based in Sussex but our connection was established through their collaboration with our Argal Farm neighbours and friends at Francli. The team at Merchant & Mills sell a sought-after downloadable pattern with all the instructions on making a Francli Day Pack. Yes, you can buy one ready made, but imagine the satisfaction of making your own!
We have a smallish role in the overall project, but we love the involvement at any level. Merchant & Mills asked us to cut and etch some leather labels to sell as an optional extra for their pattern buyers.
These laser cut patches are made from the leather off-cuts and scraps from the Francli studio. They promise to add a sophisticated branding to the finished packs.
Leather is just one of the many materials we can cut and etch at Cut By Beam. Get in touch via our Contact form if you would like us to quote for you. With a minimum order charge of just £15+vat we can handle small or large jobs, regardless of your requirements.

At Cut By Beam we make a lot of trophies for sporting events, business award ceremonies and one-off commemorative pieces. Whilst we can also etch on to metal, glass and recycled plastic (or a combination of more than one material) most customers ask us to make them from wood.
There are many advantages to wooden trophies.
We offer a range of simple trophies in our webshop here. These designs are super cost effective. All you need do is give us your designs to etch on the front of them and we will do the rest.
But if you want something more bespoke, we can help you come up with any size, shape or range that you have in mind. e.g. differently sized 1st, 2nd and 3rd place awards, with or without a painted background, cut through sections, layered with another material such as recycled acrylic. Use our Contact form to tell us what you have in mind.
This trophy (below) was made for the Tour of Britain Cornwall leg back in 2021. You can read more about this one-off creation in our news post here.
And another bespoke design for a trophy is shown below - this time for a Cornish Shrimper sailing event and made from different wood types.
]]>We're used to laser cutting wooden medals and awards for sporting events but we're struck by how many corporate or charity events are now thinking more carefully about the mass items they need for their attendees. The thought of handing out more single-use plastic goes against their (and our) company ethos and Cut By Beam can, for instance, turn around batches of individually named badges within about 10 days' notice.
Clients we have done name badges for over a number of years, include the Oxford Real Farming Conference #orfc and Surfers Against Sewage.
Wooden Name Badges
Just send us your logo, an idea of your design, size and any attachments (pins, magnetic strips, ribbons etc.) and a list of your delegates in a spreadsheet. We'll then do the rest. Price-wise you'll find that our laser cut name badges are very competitive when compared to their plastic counterparts; often cheaper. If you have a few last minute sign-ups we can always do the bulk run in advance and add any extras closer to your deadline.

We also get to work with some of these awesome businesses, when they commission our lasers to create their signs and menus, or etch on to kitchen equipment and tableware.
This week our friends at the wonderful 45 Queen Street in Penzance, asked us to mark their logo on to a large batch of elm tapas boards. We think the branding elevates these beautiful boards to another level.
You've probably seen the etches our new metal marking machine can do on knives. But if you haven't watched this recent video of some we did for Pareusi, check it out here. Their knives are found in some of the most famous kitchens across the land. So a little bit of Cornwall magic finds its way throughout the world!
Signage and menus really set the tone of a café or restaurant and we've done a lot over the years. From A frames to table menus like those below, we can always work to your budget and style. From one off bespoke pieces to batches of items.
Supplying the outlets mentioned above are also some fabulous local farmers and growers. Such as Soul Farm near Mylor who sell their produce to local businesses. We've etched them enamel mugs as well as some for a local market at Tregew Farm.
And for the next generation of budding chefs check out these spatulas which Truro High School asked us to etch as awards for their students' Go Cook workshops.
Main photo above of signage done for Kern - the mobile food truck which sells delicious cakes, ice cream and coffee.
]]>Loveday is a distillery within a couple of miles of us in Penryn, on the Cornish coast. We've recently enjoyed etching their botanical print on to some recycled glassware (below). They were so pleased with the results that they then asked us to etch the demijohn bottles you see above. We think the look fantastic, especially with the sunlight shining through them.
We get the best results when the etching is applied to a surface without a taper to it. This ensures we achieve a consistent finish as the laser head can stay at the same height above the object as it etches. And please note that we aren't set up to cut through glass.
Where a design wraps around the outside we turn the object, using a rotary attachment on the laser cutting machine.
There's sometimes a bit of extra prep-work before we start etching because we need to add some tape to the area first. We etch through that tape and then the design stays nice and crisp. It's a process we've honed over the years and
Below is a glass table top we etched for our friends at Sunbeam Jackie.
We don't tend to stock glassware ourselves but we can help advise where you might source that from. But you're also welcome to share details of anything you might have in mind before you purchase it yourself. And we can let you know by return whether we think it will work well or not using our laser process. We can also run you a quote if you share your artwork.
]]>Which means we can etch on to even more metal items than we ever could before. Signs, knives, drinks bottles, hip flasks - whatever you need to produce for your business or personal use. Get them dropped off or delivered to us in Cornwall and we can get them back out to you, wherever you happen to be in the UK.
We wanted something a bit more environmentally friendly and efficient than the way we worked with metal in the past. Before we had this new kit we had to first spray a compound on to the surface of the object and etch through that. But now we can bypass that stage of the process and etch direct on to products. Which is more efficient and time saving and has the added benefit of bringing costs down for you per item.
Our new metal marking laser kit opens up new processes including etching in colour.
Whilst we can't cut metal, we are able to etch on to almost every version of it, except tin. You're welcome to source your own blanks. Or we can help with that and recommend suppliers we've used in the past.
The hip flask pictured above was one of a batch we did for a client this summer. We used one of those we sell in our webshop here. He sent through the design by Chris Sharp and we etched it on to the front. We think it's come out so well!
We're really excited to hear what you might have in mind for us to do with this machine. The finish is beautiful, crisp and should be hard-wearing for many years to come even when used on a daily basis such as with the knives we have done for our good friends at Pareusi (see image at top) or the metal cups you can see being made in the video on our Instagram feed here.
]]>From our workshop in Falmouth, Cornwall we can cut and etch your signage so it helps your customers 'get' your brand, and understand the messages you are trying to get across; whether that's directions, a warm welcome to your business or the nitty gritty on something such as a wall mounted food menu.
We can be super flexible on helping you achieve the look you are after. Bear in mind that whilst we aren't traditional signwriters, and don't get involved with installation of signs, what we can offer is a service which is not run of the mill.
Most clients say the results they get from us, go beyond their expectations and they get very excited when they take delivery of work from us.
It's up to you if you want to supply your own material or if you'd like us to source that. For outdoor signs we do a lot in marine ply, but we can also etch on to hard woods e.g. if you have a beautiful piece of timber you would like us to use then - as long as it will fit on our machine, and its got a fairly flat surface - then it should be doable.
Our max laser bed size is 1200 x 900mm but we can sometimes move a sheet through the machine, etching areas at a time. So it could be a lot longer, depending on how easy it is to etch your design in sections like that.
For interior signs we often use birch plywood or a veneered MDF (see Kamba Coffee one above) as it gives a nice pale background for any etching to clearly contrast with.
We can also paint the surface of ply and etch through that paint to give another interesting finish. Something which we have done on the menu for our friends at Kern (see below). We used blackboard paint so that Kris & Maren could update their prices whenever they liked, rather than getting a new board made up each time.
We can also make signs from metal (see the example on copper below) or recycled materials such as acrylic or fabric. And if you want the option of spray painting your signs on things repeatedly, we could make you a stencil from wood or mylar.
We often make A Frames for cafes, shops etc. too. You can order those directly from our webshop if you'd like one of the standard sizes. But otherwise, we can quote for more bespoke, or bulk orders.
So if you've got an idea for signage, and maybe you keep putting it off, why not use our Contact page to give us your initial thoughts? And then we'll help you get the ball rolling. In no time at all you should have some lovely new signs to display.
"So pleased with our company sign. Thank you to the lovely ladies at #cutbybeam for all your help!" Quote from Cavalry Home
"Signage is a key marketing tool for brick and mortar businesses, with it being the very first impression passers by (potential customers) have of your brand. This is particularly important for Talay Thai because their restaurant is situated on the first floor, so signage needs to grab attention from the street below. We had Jenny Shipley from @cutbybeam produce the laser cut signage on the front of the building." Quote from Meor Design

If you're trying to find some bespoke awards for your own event, why not contact us. You can have any shape or size you like! And we'll make them for you from our base at Argal Farm, just outside Falmouth in Cornwall.
We recently made the ones above for the Midhurst-Milers 10k Trail Race. FSC birch plywood was cut and etched with their design. It shows up so well on this lighter colour wood. In this instance the customer added their own ribbons but we can also help with that if you want us to hand tie on a simple one for you.
Here's another example from the same material, but with more of a cut out to the design. Which is easily achieved using our laser cutters.
If you need trophies for your overall winners, we can also make those for you. It helps if you can give us an idea of your budget and then we can work with you to come up with suggested design(s).
Again, we can make these from wood, recycled acrylic or even a mixture of both. Look at these ones below, we have done for our friends at Freedom Racing. They also involve some painting and gluing various layers together, so combine a number of different processes. It's so satisfying to see them taking shape and ultimately go out into the world to be presented to worthy winners who have put so much effort into their success.
June 2022: We've just made these lovely medals for an upcoming event for Chestnut Swims. Birch plywood painted and then etched through with their design.
]]>Jenny and Celia were thrilled to be asked to take one of our laser cutter machines along to their latest 'Makers & Mavericks' event. For many years we have etched designs on to the back patches for Hiut's special edition short runs. And they asked us back to this particular event to give the weekend attendees the chance to design their own jean labels.
So alongside us listening to some inspirational talks from the weekend speakers, and enjoying the fabulous evening entertainment and food, we made more than 60 bespoke patch designs become a reality - right in front of their eyes.
We love the philosophy of Hiut who aim to do 'one thing well'. And their Makers & Mavericks weekends are a chance for like minded businesses to come together and share ideas and support. If you're interested in attending next year, take a look at the 'Off Grid' event page.

Twycross are in the process of developing the UK's first National Science and Conservation Centre, with a focus on protecting species from extinction. They’re training and inspiring the conservationists of the future and they wanted something to celebrate supporters of the project. We often etch these bricks with Green&Blue’s own logo but these were an extra special job for us to get involved with.
Faye Clifton from Green&Blue said “Bee Bricks, with their focus on creating habitat in an innovative way, stood out as the perfect way to say thank you to the zoo supporters. We were delighted to be able to work with the team at Cut By Beam to create the etching that Twycross Zoo wanted to put onto each Bee Brick.”
Green&Blue, like us, are based in Cornwall, and love to make things that contribute to helping protect our environment. They’re B Corp certified which means they strive to work not just for profit, but for the good of their local, and worldwide, communities. We’ve worked with them for a number of years and not only do we adore their products, they’re also really lovely people to deal with.
If you have something you’d like us to help you with, then please do drop us a line via our contact page. No project is too small. We’re delighted to make things happen for you.

]]>We were invited along to the Makers & Mavericks 'Make Good Trouble' event organised by Hiut Denim in west Wales. For many years we have etched their designs on to patches, for their short runs of jean design.
Hiut are such an awesome brand and bunch of people, to work with. This weekend, the event attendees had the chance to design their own bespoke patch. It was great to see the variety of artworks they came up with and you can see the results above.
We also got to listen to some of the inspiring event speakers who shared their insights into how to re-evaluate your life and business. We’ve come home with lots of motivating ideas.
David Hieatt, Hiut owner, recommends aiming to do ‘one thing well’ in your business and we like to keep that in mind in our work at Cut By Beam. The great thing is that we then get to work with lots of other individuals and companies who are also doing their ‘one thing well’. So the ripples of that philosophy continue out into the community and no single day is ever the same in our workshop.
]]>With an emphasis on using locally sourced wood from a managed woodland, we spoke to Tom Kemp from Working Woodlands Cornwall. He suggested we use a piece of oak from Devichoys Wood, which he manages for Cornwall Wildlife Trust, which happens to be on the race route near Falmouth.
He gave us three options and we chose one with the most interesting characteristics; markings we knew would add a special quality to the finished award.
Looking at the rings, the chosen piece is estimated to be around 50 years old.
We asked local wood turner, Thane Osborne, to machine it into a cylinder.
The client, Cornwall Council, gave us a fairly loose spec, but had briefed us on some essential elements they wanted to feature on the finished design, including a map of Cornwall and the St. Piran's flag.
Lynn designed and created the digital artwork in a format ready to etch on to the wood.
Once etched, using the rotary attachment on our laser cutter, we hand finished the award with water-based paints, inks and nourishing wood oils.
Cut By Beam are keen to make more sustainable trophies such as this one. As well as being so much more pleasing to cherish and display, we like to think that our end products have minimal impact on the environment in their making. Even our workshop is run on sustainable heating and locally generated power.
We are looking forward to watching the Tour Of Britain and seeing who gets to hold aloft the trophy we made for the Grand Depart at Cut By Beam.
More background information on the source of the original wood can be found in this lovely video featuring Working Woodlands.

Simon from Stallards and The Hidden Hut asked Cut By Beam to etch both the menus and the place name tags for the beach BBQ which took place for the world leaders and their partners.
It really was a memorable job to open the files and see the names on the guest list including Joe Biden, Angela Merkel, Emmanuel Macron and Boris Johnson.
View more on the G7 Instagram highlights here.
Furniture for the summit was also created by local craftsman Scott Woyka and, to add to our excitement, Scott commissioned us to etch the G7 logo on to some tables.
]]>With more cafés and shops opening up again after lockdown, many businesses have asked us to add their designs to the sides or bases of the blanks that we stock. They make great gifts as well as promotional tools for brands, artists or charities.
We tend to stock white or cream, 8cm diameter, mugs. And offer a range of different coloured rims. You're free to mix and match those colours if you can't decide which ones you'd prefer!
They're dishwasher and oven safe (up to 270 degrees Celsius). Our standard max engraving area on the sides is 55 x 55mm. But we are always happy to run a bespoke quote if clients want something larger. And you're welcome to pop an etch on both sides of the mug or even underneath. We just can't etch the insides.
We're also happy to provide an 'etch-only' quote if you would like to source your own enamelware. Whether that be mugs, plates, bowls, etc. However, please bear in mind that lighter colours are more effective. Designs show up as tones of black, so if you have a darker background, the etch will not be as high in contrast. The mug below is a good example of the different effects you can achieve from using shades of black.
One of the biggest orders we've taken this spring was from Pavilion Bakery in London. They commissioned batches with their logo curving right around the base of the mugs. Whilst a little more expensive, the effect is stunning and proving really popular as they've recently asked us to do some more for their Newquay branch.
She pressed record on her phone and drove to work, describing the journey to the workshop at Cut By Beam. When she played the recording back, the charm of it then prompted her to create this animation which you can view on our YouTube channel. We hope you like it.
With the easing of Covid restrictions, we look forward to seeing more clients in person again soon. For now, our laser cutting machines are operating as normal and can usually answer any questions that you might have via email. Do drop us a line via our contact page if you would like a quotation.
]]>Having long been an admirer of Holly Tucker, and the work she does shining light on the small and independent business community, it was an honour to be involved.
Our philosophy is that if you are going to reward someone, you should present them with something which they'll be proud to display prominently in their home, shop or office. And give them something which will has also had minimal environmental impact through its manufacture.
We think that sustainable materials are much more beautiful too.
Above: wooden trophy made for a sailing regatta at Windsport.
Other customers we have made awards for over the past year, include Surfers Against Sewage and The Society for the Environment
Awards can also be practical and we have etched re-usable metal flasks and food containers, such as those from Chilly's bottles pictured below.
]]>
If you'd like us to create some decorations or other festive gifts for you, email us before the end of November with your designs and we will be delighted to give you a quote.
]]>We can laser cut and etch a bespoke sign for your office, shop, takeaway, restaurant, rented accommodation or own home.
For outdoor signs, which might need to withstand the elements, we recommend using a hardwood, marine plywood, or something like slate, concrete or recycled acrylic. Wherever possible we recommend you choose something using sustainable materials. All our wood is responsibly sourced and we use recycled acrylic.
For internal signage the most cost effective option is something like birch plywood.
Our laser cutters can turn a blank piece of wood into a thing of beauty and can of course etch any design you give us. You don't have to stick with a square or rectangle, as illustrated by this sign we did for the art gallery North Coast Asylum. We first cut the shape, then painted and etched the wording.
Here's another example of a wooden sign that we painted before etching for Homage to the Bovine. This time in blackboard paint so that the client can then use chalk to mark on it.
Signs can be any size as long as they will fit on our machine beds; no wider than 1200mm on our largest laser cutter. We can, however, fit longer pieces through the front of the machine if you want something extra big. There is also the option of us etching two or more separate pieces of material and you joining them together on site.
We don't get involved in sign installation but can lasercut any necessary hanging holes as required.

We’ve just cut the latest round of pattern pieces for their gorgeous phone cases.
Francli take pre-orders for these in batches, so as to minimise waste. Made in quality Italian vegetable tanned leather, we then get involved at Cut By Beam to cut out the pieces and make sure that as much of the material gets used as possible. If there are gaps between the phone case pieces, we make labels for them, or they kindly donate offcuts for us to use on other projects. Finally we laser etch each case with its own unique batch number. Read the full story of the process here.
We’re lucky to have Tor Harrison working nearby as well, to take great pictures of what we all do.
]]>Enamel mugs are particularly popular. One of the most recent examples being those with a design by Aidan Meighan - pictured above.
The Ernest Journal, which is a blog, iPad magazine and biannual printed publication, wanted to raise funds to launch their next issue. We etched Aidan's design on to a batch of mugs in July.
Soul Farm is 1.5 acre no-dig market farm growing seasonal vegetables in Falmouth, Cornwall. In late 2019, they wanted to raise money to help with the setup costs of their first season. We etched them these enamel mugs and they were included in some reward levels on offer through their Crowdfunder page. The farm is now up and running but they continue to sell the mugs through their online shop.
Kris Hallenga, founder of the breast cancer charity Coppafeel, is a good friend of Cut By Beam. She asked us to make these keyrings as a gift to those supporting her forthcoming crowdfunded book called 'How to Glitter a Turd' Pre-orders are currently still being taken!
Get in touch if you have any ideas about fundraising thank you gifts. Chopping boards, drinks bottles, hip flasks, bar blades are just some of the items we can etch with your designs.
]]>
Take a look at some of the items we have been able to customise on our laser cutters.
We love the effect we were able to achieve on this knife (main photo) from the Pareusi Blackline Nakiri range. The company commissioned this particular knife for the celebrated chef Paul Ainsworth, with whom they are currently working. The amazing artistic design was by Fat Punk Studio.
Whilst we can't etch directly onto metal, we can mark it by first applying a compound to the surface and etching through that.
Etching onto metal like this should last well. It may fade a little over time, but should stand up well to chopping and washing.
We can also etch into chopping boards. We do lots as one-off items, as well as in bulk for retailers. Again, you can have as detailed or simple a design as you wish.
Both laser etched knives and boards make a great gift idea, especially for weddings (as above). We recommend that you source your own products and then ask us to etch them.
Cost will depend on the size and intricacy of the design.

]]>Supplied with or without the ring included, they also make great gifts or freebies for your clients or, for instance, crowdfunding rewards.
Send us your finished design, or if you can't put that together yourself, email your logo or some wording and we can create the artwork for you.

]]>We're all having to adapt to new ways of working and we know some of our customers are, understandably, cautious or even worried about the future.
However, over the past week we have done work for many clients. Including shops, cafés, wedding venues and restaurants. Take a look at these coat check numbers we did for Appletons Bar and Restaurant in Fowey; a cost-effective way to make what could be an unremarkable item, fun, interesting and practical.
We've also made some beautiful folders for the Cornish country estate at Boconnoc. They offer accommodation and a venue for events such as weddings. These include a living hinge which we laser cut in house.
The living hinge is an amazing cutting pattern that allows you to bend and stretch materials that are usually flat and rigid such as the plywood here.
At Cut By Beam we can help with all sorts of items for the retail and hospitality industries, including laser cut signage, rubbers stamps, keyrings, table numbers, menus, a-frame advertising boards, glassware, pump clips and coasters. The list is endless and we look forward to helping you with your ideas as we all move tentatively towards the hope of resuming some form of 'normality'.
Cut By Beam is OPEN please do contact us today with any enquires.
]]>This batch of blue tit enamel mugs we etched for Lou Tonkin seems a nice representation of that and what better way is there to enjoy a moment outside than being accompanied by a lovely cup of tea.
Working 'on' your business
For many of our clients, coronavirus has forced them to start working 'on' their business a little more, rather than necessarily 'in' it; ensuring their nests are in good shape, as it were, to move forward once the lockdown eases.
Some are catching up on jobs they may have been putting off for a while but will stand them in good stead in the future. Whether that's putting in better processes, stock checking or reviewing supply chains. Others are diversifying or enhancing existing areas which now seem more appropriate or sustainable.
Whilst this time can of course be stressful in so many ways, it can also offer opportunities. It's encouraging to see the creative thinking which is leading to exciting new projects, and which Cut By Beam can sometimes also play a part in.
]]>We came up with this simple animation style by laser etching illustrations on to wooden slides. Watch the short test of the laser cutting animation here.
We were all so happy with it we decided to make something in this style to tell the story of the workshop here at Cut By Beam. We are hoping to still be able to produce this once we are out of lockdown.
We love how the changing grain of the wood animates itself in the background too. Such a good example of how collaborating with other industries can push your creative capability.
Keep your business moving forward during Covid-19 - we're still open!
Let us know if you have ideas of projects to move your business forward during these times. We would love to help. Contact us today.
]]>Even before the lockdown was officially announced, we quickly introduced new working practices to enable our laser cutting business to continue operating during the current health crisis. In ‘normal’ times - there would be up to 5 of us in a relatively small workshop, plus the occasional visiting customer. It’s hard to social distance in that scenario. So we took the early decision for Jenny to work alone on site, whilst other staff swap in with her or continue to do art-working or administration from home.
Orders are coming in from new and repeat clients and, as usual, we’re playing a part in some interesting projects. They include a laser cut architecture model for a practice in London, etched baby teething rings, trays and application spoons for a vegan, spa lotion company called Scence (see header image). Plus a commission for wooden board games – in great demand at the moment.
Contact us if you’d like to discuss your own ideas. Our minimum order charge is only £15+vat. Bespoke gifts or small personal jobs are as welcome as larger bulk runs.

Whilst we will only have one person working on site in the workshop at any one time, we are comfortably set up to be able to still fulfil orders*
So please continue to send us your project ideas. We will be extremely grateful for any business you put our way, to keep us going through this period.
All deliveries will be sent out via a DPD courier.
* If you collect your order from us in person, we will ask you not to come directly into the workshop.
